Magic Johnson should not weigh in on character issue
Deng: Disappointed by comments http://es.pn/1rVqqDN -via SportsCenter http://es.pn/scappandroid
Danny Ferry is an idiot for the things he said.
However
Magic Johnson should refrain from asking people to step down based on character issues. Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't he become HIV positive by cheating on his wife?
Point being, we should all be careful when we act as the moral compass.

Hell and Heaven
One man's hell is another man's heaven. Funny how someone can have a home, a family, working automobiles, good health, friends, etc... and feel like if they had one more of something they would be happy. If he could just be free of his responsibilities, his duties, his debts, he would be happy.
Another man who lives alone, has no bills, no family to pin him down, who is retired, would give anything to have a need to be somewhere, to be responsible to or for someone, to have a place to call home.
Sometimes these scenarios apply to the same man who in his attempt to find happiness reaches in every direction only to find that his inability to live in the moment is what keeps him in hell and keeps him out of heaven.

Blues For Allah, Grateful Dead, 1975
Blues For Allah"
Arabian wind, The needle's eye is thin, The ships of state sail on mirage,
And drown in sand, Out in no-man's land where Allah does command.
What good is spilling blood? It will not grow a thing;
Taste eternity the swords sing: Blues of Allah In 'sh'Allah.
They lie where they fall, There's nothing more to say,
The desert stars are bright tonight lets meet as friends,
The Flower of Islam, The Fruit of Abraham.
The thousand stories have come round to one again,
Arabian night, Our Gods pursue their fight,
What fatal flowers of darkness bloom from seeds of light.
Bird of paradise fly in white sky, Blues for Allah In 'sh'Allah,
Let's see with our heart, These things our eyes have seen,
And know the truth must still lie somewhere in between.
Under eternity, under eternity, under eternity blue,
Bird of paradise fly in white sky, Blues for Allah In 'sh'Allah.

Gone fishing
Asked my 12 year old son to go fishing today. He looked at me like I had 3 heads. He said "fishing? You never just want to sit and relax." Once he realized I was serious, we got our thing together and headed for the door.
When I went to say good bye to my daughter and wife, they asked me where I was going. I told them I was going fishing. They laughed and said "what are you doing, you never just want to sit and relax."
Guess I need to go and relax a little more often so it doesn't look so funny when I do.

Robin Williams
I would think anything I have to say about Robin Williams will most likely be unoriginal but I've never let that stop me from opening my mouth or in this case, my keyboard.
The love felt by the world for him has been an amazing thing to observe. In spite of how he died and the obvious depression he suffered from, people have seen past it, and have love him regardless.
Can you imagine if we could do the same for the mentally challenged adult we see in the grocery store? How about the homeless person outside a football stadium that you pass on the way into a game?
My usual reaction in these cases is to avoid eye contact and keep moving. Let it be someone else's problem. Don't get involved. I have enough in my own life to deal with.
No, this doesn't make me a bad person or mean that I don't care. It just means that I'm human. I'm not always at my best.
I have no words of wisdom or a way to motivate myself or anyone else.
What I do have, even if it's just for a moment, is gratitude in my heart that I could see past myself and love someone like Robin Williams who in end was just like me......Human
Slow to judge
A friend of mine is an avid Notre Dame fan. We were discussing the recent suspension of 4 of their starting football players due to academic fraud. He said they are one of the few schools that consistently tell on themselves and hold themselves accountable. I got the impression he felt it was unfair. I cringe anytime someone sets their organization or themselves as "the standard" I subscribe to the theory that we are all imperfect and that there is a bit of bad in the best of us and a bit of good in the worst of us. I often see big falls from those that have been the face of "the standard". This morning I happened upon a sports talk program discussing Notre Dame and the suspensions. My beloved OSU has 185 majors. Notre Dame has 20. Obviously it's alot harder to keep a player eligible when there are only 20 majors. Oh, and these 20 majors are upper core majors, not basket weaving. Im not knocking OSU as an educational provider. They are amazing. That said, they have managed to make it easier to stay academically eligible if your an athlete. Again, I hate when someone professes to be the standard. Here is the problem with that disdain, it's misguided. The truth is, they should be the standard if they have earned it.. I can hate it all I want but in the end it's pretty black and white. We as a society shouldn't lower the standard to meet the people. We should raise the people to the standard. Not everyone should get a trophy. Work harder, be better then you thought possible. Be the standard. Be slow to judge others and be quick to learn from the things they do well.
When do we stop making excuses
So much of the media is consumed with failures to assign full responsibility. Police officers vilafied for excessive force yet no one discusses the criminal act that precipitated the police action. No, we should absolutely not ignore the actions of the police. They should be accountable. That said, the criminal act needs equal attention because it is the true face of the epidemic we face as a society. Core values. Don't steal. Don't do drugs. Don't sell drugs. Don't beat a woman. We often seem to get lost in excuses about our behavior and then blame everyone including police for the repercussions of our actions.
My Dad has given me a consistant message throughout my life. "grow up". Two simple words. These two words need to be the backbone of the change we need as a society.
If we want the issue of police brutality to stop, let's stop taking the actions that lead us to the point that we need the police.
Let's grow up.
